Tinnitus is characterised by continual noise or ringing, buzzing, crackling, clicking, roaring, whistling or hissing sound heard inside one or both ears. Sufferers of tinnitus can experience a wide variety of noise, the severity of which ranges from minor annoyance to debilitating pain. In some cases, it signals problem, such as an ear injury, loss of hearing, or blood vessel disorder. The excess type is caused by fury or fright with upward rush of wind fire of the liver and gall bladder that obstructs the qi circulation in the meridian or caused by invasion of pathogenic wind blocking the orifice. The deficiency type is due to deficiency of the kidney qi and failure of essential qi to ascend to the ear.
Tinnitus is sometimes caused by exposure to loud noises. It can also occur as a side effect to certain medications(including some antibiotics, cancer drugs, and diuretics or as the result of earwax blockage.
In other cases, tinnitus results from an underlying condition, such as: •age-related hearing loss •allergies •low or high blood pressure(blood circulation problems) •disorders of the circulatory system •Meniere’s disease (an inner-ear disorder) •acoustic neuroma (a noncancerous tumor on the cranial nerve) •a tumor •diabetes •thyroid problems •injury to the head or neck, as well as a variety of medications including anti-inflammatory medicines, antibiotics, sedatives, antidepressants, and aspirin, colds and flu, noisy environments, allergy flare-ups can increase the intensity of tinnitus noise. Other tinnitus irritants include high salt intake, sugar, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, various medications, tobacco, and caffeine.
Main manifestations: Sudden deafness, distension sensation and constant ringing in the ear that can not be eliminated by pressing. In the case of upward perversion of pathogenic wind fire of the liver and gall bladder, there are flushed face, dry mouth, irritability and hot temper, forceful and string taut pulse. In the case of invasion by exogenous pathogenic wind, there appear headache and superficial pulse.
Analysis: The pathogenic fire of the liver and gall bladder that flames up along the related meridians results in deafness, tinnitus, headache, flushed face, bitter taste in the mouth and dryness of the throat. Hyper function of the liver causes hot temper and irritability is brought about the pathogenic heat disturbing the mind. Forceful and string taut pulse indicates the excess condition of the liver and gall bladder. When the pathogenic wind attacks the exterior of the body and obstructs the orifices, deafness, tinnitus and headache occur. Superficial pulse is a sign of invasion of the exogenous pathogenic wind.
Main manifestation: Protracted deafness, intermittent tinnitus aggravated by strain and eliminated by pressing, dizziness, soreness and aching of the lower back, seminal emission, excessive leukorrhea, thready and weak pulse.
Analysis: Hypo function of the kidney makes essential qi fail to ascend and fill up the orifices, so there are deafness, tinnitus and dizziness. The loin is the house of the kidney, so hypo function of the kidney causes soreness and aching of the lower back. Deficiency of the kidney qi with impaired restraining function or deficiency of yin with flaming up of the asthenic fire that stimulates the seminal organs causes emission. Since the kidney loses its function of restricting the meridian. Thready and weak pulse are signs of deficiency condition.
Treatment for Tinnitus – It may be quite difficult to eliminate the noise completely according to western medicine. Strategies that may relieve symptoms include: •use of noise-suppressing devices (such as white noise machines)
•avoiding irritants (including loud noises and nicotine). If tinnitus occurs suddenly and/or is accompanied by hearing loss or dizziness, consult as quickly as possible.
Each sufferer of tinnitus has a personal experience with the condition. What brings relief for one person may not work for another.
